Dr. Iris Rosenfeld said it best: “Reflect on what the holidays really mean to you and remember to stretch daily, exercise regularly, eat right and hydrate your body with water.”

She continues: “Most of all, relax and tell your family how much you love them.”canstockphoto2132898kale

Eat your greens! Leafy vegetables are nutritional powerhouses, brimming with fiber, with vitamins, minerals, and disease-fighting phytonutrients. They aid everything from the skin to blood pressure and weight loss. Leafy greens balance blood sugar, and some research coming out from Tufts University suggests it might also prevent insulin resistance.

Leafy greens are rich sources of folate and folic acid, and folate assists with the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, Serotonin plays an important part in the regulation of learning, mood, sleep might also have a role in anxiety, migraine, vomiting and appetite. Be sure to eat other veggies, as well–and the more colorful the plate, the better. Each color contains a different set of phytonutrients, and those are the things that help us fight disease.
Do-it-yourself accupressure treatment.  Acupuncturist Sandy Root, La.C says the following will help aid anxiety, arthritis, chronic pain, insomnia and “brain chatter.” Gently massage and stimulate the area between the two eyes (the Chinese refer to it as Yin Tang. Sandy says it’s usually done for three to four minutes, but says to stop if you feel any discomfort . “Even stimulating for just one minute can help,” she says.
Take a few hours out for a retreat, either vitual or physical: Healthcare Marketer Kelley Connors recently attended the “Divas in Distress” yoga and wellness retreat on a Connecticut farm called “Sticks and Stones,” with natural health and nutrition coaches, juicing and a farm-to-table lunch.” It’s that time of year when a day (or an hour!) in retreat is a balm for stressed out nerves.” By the way, this would be a great way to treat yourself to some much-needed recovery time in the New Year.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), pets are responsible for at least house fires per year-and the American Red Cross says over 500,000 pets are affected by fires per year?

For a pet, the holidays can offer a lot of fire hazards: cooked and baked items to scavenge, tree lights to chew, lit candles to knock over.

Seriously–and you can’t make this stuff up–they turn on stoves. NFPA says a stove or cook top is the number one piece of equipment involved in your pet starting a fire.

Here’s how they do it: Pets smell a tasty morsel on or near the stove. They “counter surf”–something both cats and dogs do–some dogs have even been known to push chairs on which they can climb to reach. The paw slips, the knobs turn and fire starts. When you leave the house, either remove the knobs or use covers so the pets can’t get at them.
